Plant Selection
BRCC Rain Garden

Native/naturalized v. Non-native
When it comes time to select plant species for your rain garden I think it wise to go with native or naturalized plants. There are some native plant species (trees, shrubs, perennials, etc) available and if your local nursery has a poor selection - tell them so! If your planting in a particular stressful situation, you may want to consider going with some other non-native species that will perform better under your particular stressful situations.

Wet & Dry.
The plant species you select should be happy living in a wet environment. After a rain, the rain garden is going to catch a large amount of water and these plants will need to feel at home in order to actively transpire the extra water. However, your plants are also going to need to be able to tolerate extended dry periods.

The table (on the Rain Garden home page) has links to the the plants currently in our rain garden. I'm going to try and take pictures throughout the year so you can see how our plants are performing.

Our rain garden is only a couple of years old, so I've been trying to get some trees, shrubs, and perennials established before working in some annuals.

Naturally... there will be a considerable amount of information added to this page during the summer (2002). In fact, I consider the most important page. If you select the wrong species you will pay out the nose for maintenance and replacements in the future.
